Why do I pay anything at all?

Because an employer-paid training card is a taxable benefit, and in Denmark benefits are taxed like salary.

It works exactly like a company phone or car: you receive something of value, so tax is due on that value. It happens automatically through your payslip.

There is a 1,400 kr per year threshold for private employee benefits, but a sports card is far above it, and once the threshold is exceeded, the entire amount is taxed, not just the part above it. So the card is taxable from the first month.

  • You get no bill and have no form to fill in
  • The amount is deducted automatically with your normal tax
  • You simply see slightly less net pay than a colleague without the card
  • If you pay a share yourself, the taxable amount drops accordingly

Doesn't your workplace have SportPas yet?

Most schemes start with one employee asking. Here's a message you can forward.

Send to your manager or HR

Hi

I came across SportPas, one training card giving access to gyms, swimming pools, climbing, yoga, crossfit and padel across Aarhus.

The company pays a fixed price per employee, and you decide whether to cover it fully or split the cost with us. They also handle reporting the taxable value, so it doesn't create extra work for payroll.

I think it could be a good benefit for us, and cheaper than each of us paying for our own memberships.

Could you take a look at sportpas.dk?

Best regards
